What children will practise

Subtract within 10 by taking away or counting back, including taking a number from itself to get zero and taking away zero to leave it unchanged, and check by adding.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - 7 - 3 = 4 - 9 - 5 = 4 - 6 - 6 = 0 - 10 - 4 = 6 (because 6 + 4 = 10) - 5 - 0 = 5 (0 and 10 are distractors)

How to use it in class

Use early in the subtraction unit once children have taken away real objects. 5 minutes. - Play solo with counters allowed throughout - Compare questions 3 and 6: taking everything away versus taking nothing away - If many are one off, show counting back along a number line without counting the starting number - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In question 6, choosing 0 on seeing a zero, or 10 by confusing it with addition - In question 2, answering 5 by counting 9 itself when counting back - In question 3, choosing 6, thinking taking a number from itself leaves it unchanged
