What children will practise

Add three numbers with a total of up to 10 by adding a pair at a time, and see that adding zero changes nothing.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 - 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 - 3 + 3 + 4 = 10 - 1 + 4 + 5 = 10 - 0 + 5 + 2 = 7

How to use it in class

Use as a step on once children add two numbers fluently. 6 minutes. - Play in pairs: one child adds the first pair, the other adds the third number, swapping roles each question - After question 4, show that 4 + 5 = 9 then + 1 = 10 also works; pick the easiest pair first - If many slip, write the first pair's total under the sum before adding on - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Adding only two numbers and forgetting the third, e.g. 6 in question 3; since the options are close, this usually shows as one too many or too few - In question 6, thinking 0 + 5 is 0, or counting zero as one - In question 2, answering 4 by adding only 2 + 2
