What children will practise

Order numbers from 0 to 10 smallest-first and largest-first, both consecutive and spaced out, to build a sense of how numbers and zero are ordered.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a put-in-order game with 4 numbers each - Smallest to largest: 1, 2, 3, 4 - Smallest to largest: 5, 6, 7, 8 - Largest to smallest: 10, 9, 8, 7 - Smallest to largest with gaps: 0, 3, 6, 9

How to use it in class

Use early in Grade 1 once children count 1 to 10. 4-5 minutes. - Play as a class; count aloud together before dragging each round - For round 3, do a rocket countdown: ten, nine, eight, seven - If many miss round 4, lay cards 0 to 9 on the floor and pick out only 0, 3, 6 and 9 - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 3, ordering smallest-first because every other round does; practise reading largest to smallest - In round 4, putting 0 last, thinking zero is nothing and so not a number - In round 4, swapping 6 and 9, which look alike upside down
