A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Split four into two equal parts and each part is two.
Split six into two equal parts and each is three, because three plus three is six.
Split eight into two equal parts and each is four, because four plus four is eight.
Before you play
Split even numbers up to 10 into two equal parts, and see that an odd number cannot be halved into two equal whole numbers, using what children know about doubles.
6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - Half of 4 is 2 - Half of 6 is 3, because 3 + 3 = 6 - Half of 10 is 5 - Which cannot be split into two equal halves (6, 7, 8): 7 - Half of 2 is 1
Use once children know doubles such as 3 + 3 and 4 + 4. About 5 minutes. - Before playing, children share 8 counters fairly between two friends - Play solo with counters allowed on every question - If many miss question 5, try sharing 7 real counters; one is always left over - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.
- In question 6, choosing 2, thinking half of 2 is the same two pieces, or choosing 0 - In question 3, choosing 5 or 3 from a slip when halving - In question 5, choosing 6 or 8 because cannot be split equally is not understood
