A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Five times two up to five times five.
Ten times two up to ten times five.
Compare the tens first - if they differ you already know, without looking at the ones.
Before you play
Order products from the 5 and 10 tables, order two-digit numbers largest to smallest (indicator ค 1.1 ป.2/3), and put the steps of subtraction with borrowing in order.
4 ordering questions - 10, 15, 20, 25 from the 5 times table - 20, 30, 40, 50 from the 10 times table - 87, 78, 69, 56 largest to smallest - Look at the ones, borrow from the tens, subtract the ones, subtract the tens that are left
Play before practising subtraction with borrowing on paper, about 5 minutes, solo or pairs. - Use 87 and 78 to discuss how the same two digits swapped give different values - After the subtraction steps, work 52 - 27 on the board in order and have pupils point to "subtract the tens that are left" - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book
- Swapping 87 and 78 because both use 8 and 7. Look at the tens - In the subtraction steps, putting "subtract the ones" before "borrow from the tens", the very habit that leads to taking the smaller digit from the larger. Try 2 - 7 to show it cannot be done - Dragging quickly and placing 20 before 15 in the 5 times table
