What children will practise

Solve two-step word problems with numbers up to 1,000 (indicator ค 1.1 ป.2/8), working out which step comes first, such as multiply then subtract, or add then subtract.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, each with two steps - 50 baht, spend 20 then 15 more: 15 left - 12 pencils, 8 more, 5 given away: 15 left - Three packets at 10 baht, paid with 50: 20 change - Save 5 baht a day for 8 days, spend 20: 20 left - 2 trays of 10 eggs, 6 used: 14 left

How to use it in class

Use once one-step problems are secure, about 10 minutes. Team mode is best: teams write both steps on paper, the first result and the second. - After each item, ask "What does the first-step number mean in the story?" e.g. 30 baht is the cost of all the snacks - For the items with multiplication (three packets, two egg trays, eight days) draw the groups first - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book

Common sticking points

- Stopping after step one, e.g. 30 for the snacks or 40 for the savings; neither is an option, so pupils guess the nearest. Ask "What is the question asking?" - Choosing 35 for 25 students, 10 arrive, 5 leave, having done only the adding step - Choosing 20 or 10 for 50 baht minus 20 then 15. Subtract one step at a time and write the middle result
