What children will practise

Divide two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers using the 6, 8 and 9 times tables, working back from multiplication facts (indicator ค 1.1 ป.3/7).

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions - 48 ÷ 8 = 6 and 72 ÷ 8 = 9 - 64 ÷ 8 = 8 - 54 ÷ 9 = 6 and 81 ÷ 9 = 9 - 36 ÷ 6 = 6

How to use it in class

Use once the 6 to 9 tables are learned, about 5 minutes. Timed solo mode suits it, since these are facts to recall quickly. - 81 ÷ 9, 64 ÷ 8 and 36 ÷ 6 are all square numbers; let pupils notice the answer equals the divisor - 72 ÷ 8 has 10 as a distractor; have pupils check that 8 × 10 is 80, too big - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book; replay on several days and watch scores improve

Common sticking points

- Choosing 8 for 72 ÷ 8, confusing it with 64 ÷ 8. Count one more row on from 8 × 8 = 64 - Choosing 5 or 7 for 54 ÷ 9 from a slip in the 9 times table. Use the finger trick for nines - Choosing 7 or 5 for 48 ÷ 8, mixing it up with 56 and 40
