What children will practise

Know that 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams, convert between kilograms and grams (indicator ค 2.1 ป.3/9), and estimate the weight of objects and of themselves (ค 2.1 ป.3/8).

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions - 1 kg is 1000 g and 2 kg is 2000 g - 500 g + 500 g = 1 kg - Which is heaviest: a bicycle, a pencil or a book? - A P3 child weighs about 25 kg; distractors 2.5 and 250 kg - 1500 g is 1.5 kg

How to use it in class

Use after pupils have weighed real objects, about 6 minutes, team mode. If you have a 1 kg bag of sugar and a 500 g packet, pass them round to compare while playing. - For body weight, ask what the school nurse's scales showed rather than having pupils say their weight in front of the class - 1500 g uses the decimal 1.5, which P3 has not learned; explain that 1.5 kg is read as one and a half kilos - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book

Common sticking points

- Choosing 200 or 20000 for 2 kg, unsure how many zeros. Write 1 kg = 1000 g on the board and double it - Choosing 15 kg for 1500 g by removing two zeros. Split it into 1000 g and 500 g: one kilo and a half - Choosing 2.5 or 250 kg for a child, with no feel for a kilogram. Hold a real bag of sugar
