What children will practise

Read word problems and choose multiplication or division (indicators ค 1.1 ป.3/6 and ป.3/7): equal groups mean multiply, equal sharing means divide.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions - 5 boxes of 8 make 40; distractor 13 - 36 pencils in 4 equal boxes: 9 in each - Six notebooks at 15 baht: 90 baht - 42 students in 6 equal groups: 7 in each - 100 baht buys 4 items at 25 baht each

How to use it in class

Use once both multiplication and division are taught, about 8 minutes, team mode. Before answering, teams write the number sentence, e.g. 36 ÷ 4 = ? - 5 boxes of 8 has 13 as a distractor, from adding; afterwards ask "Why isn't 5 + 8 the answer?" - For 100 baht at 25 each, count up 25, 50, 75, 100 - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book

Common sticking points

- Choosing 13 for 5 boxes of 8 by adding whatever two numbers appear. Draw 5 boxes with 8 dots - Choosing 80 or 95 for six notebooks at 15 baht, slipping on two-digit by one-digit multiplication. Split into 6 × 10 + 6 × 5 - Choosing 5 or 3 for 100 baht at 25 each, never having divided by a two-digit number. Count up in 25s
