A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
The bottom number is the four slices in all; the top is the one eaten - so one quarter.
Two quarters simplifies to one half, because top and bottom both divide by two.
All three have the same bottom number, so just compare the tops - three is largest.
Before you play
Name a fraction from a situation (indicator ค 1.1 ป.4/3), find equal fractions, compare fractions with the same denominator or numerator (ป.4/4), and add fractions with the same denominator.
6 multiple-choice questions - A pizza in 4 equal slices, 1 eaten: 1/4 - 2/4 equals 1/2 - Largest of 1/5, 2/5, 3/5: 3/5 - 1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4; distractor 2/8 - Smallest of 1/4, 1/8, 1/2: 1/8 - 3/3 equals 1
Use at the start of the P4 fractions unit to review basics, about 6 minutes, team mode, with fraction strips or paper circles. - If many choose 2/8 for 1/4 + 1/4, shade two quarters on one circle: it makes half, not two eighths - For 1/8 being smallest, use a pizza shared by 8 people versus 2 people - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book
- Choosing 2/8 for 1/4 + 1/4 by adding tops and bottoms. Show it on one circle - Choosing 1/2 as the smallest, thinking a small bottom number means a small fraction. Use the pizza-sharing story - Choosing 3 for 3/3 because of the two 3s. Ask how many whole pizzas you have eaten if you ate every slice
