Before you begin
Look at the marked inside angle and name it as acute, right or obtuse by comparing it with a right angle.
10 questions, 20 points - An unscored example: a right angle - Ten angles drawn as two straight arms with an arc: 4 acute (1, 4, 7, 10), 3 right (2, 5, 9) and 3 obtuse (3, 6, 8) - Q7 is a very narrow acute angle; Q8 is an obtuse angle drawn with a large arc - A separate answer key is included
Use after introducing right, acute and obtuse angles. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Give each child a folded-paper right-angle tester to hold against every angle before answering - Follow up with an angle hunt round the classroom, such as desk corners, book covers and clock hands, naming each type
- Judging by the size of the arc or the length of the arms rather than whether the angle opens wider than a right angle, e.g. Q8 - Calling angles that open to the left, such as Q3 and Q6, acute - Mixing up the names acute and obtuse
