What children will practise

Find the area of shapes on a grid by counting whole squares, using rows times columns for rectangles, and give the answer in square units.

What's in the worksheet

5 questions, 20 points (plus an unscored example: 2 × 2 = 4 square units) - Questions 1-3 are rectangles: 4 × 3 = 12, 3 × 3 = 9 and 5 × 2 = 10 square units - Question 4 is an L shape of 5 square units and question 5 a staircase of 10 - Each item has a line for the counting method before the answer - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use in the first lesson on area, once children are comfortable with multiplication. Allow about 15 minutes. - Let children tile a real shape with small paper squares first so area means squares that cover it - For question 5, have partners compare methods, e.g. column by column 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, or row by row

Common sticking points

- Counting grid lines or corners instead of squares, which gives too large an answer - Double-counting or missing squares in the staircase in question 5 by not marking squares already counted - Adding the sides instead of multiplying, e.g. 4 + 3 = 7 for question 1, mixing area up with perimeter - Leaving off the unit, square units
