A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Three quarters is more than two thirds - over twelfths it is nine against eight.
Divide top and bottom by two and you get one half.
The tops match; the bigger the bottom, the smaller the fraction.
Before you play
Compare fractions, simplify to lowest terms, find equal fractions, and spot an improper fraction greater than 1 (indicator ค 1.1 ป.4/4).
6 multiple-choice questions - Which fraction is greater than 2/3? 3/4 - 2/4 equals 1/2, and 3/6 simplifies to 1/2 - Smallest of 1/3, 1/6, 1/9: 1/9 - Which fraction is greater than 1? 5/4 - 4/8 and 1/2 are the same
Use after teaching equivalent fractions and lowest terms, 6-8 minutes, team mode, with fraction strips for every team. - Q2, Q4 and Q6 all come back to 1/2; afterwards, ask pupils for more fractions equal to 1/2 - For "greater than 2/3", the denominators 3 and 4 are not multiples of each other, so compare with fraction strips rather than calculating - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book
- For 4/8 versus 1/2, choosing "4/8 is greater" because its numbers are bigger. Lay fraction strips side by side - For "greater than 2/3", many have no method to compare 3/4 with 2/3 and guess. Use fraction strips - Choosing 2/8 as equal to 2/4 by changing only the bottom. Stress that top and bottom must be multiplied or divided by the same number
