A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
It goes up in threes: twelve plus three is fifteen.
Each step doubles: sixteen times two is thirty-two.
It goes down in tens: eighty take away ten is seventy.
Before you play
Find the next number in patterns that rise or fall by a fixed amount, patterns that double each time, and the pattern of square numbers 1, 4, 9, 16. The doubling and square-number patterns go beyond P4 and sit closest to the pattern problem-solving indicator ค 1.2 ป.6/1, which the curriculum places in P6.
6 multiple-choice questions - 3, 6, 9, 12, next is 15 - 2, 4, 8, 16, next is 32; distractors 24 and 20 - 100, 90, 80, next is 70 - 1, 4, 9, 16, next is 25 - 5, 10, 20, 40, next is 80 - 50, 45, 40, next is 35
Use as a reasoning starter, 5-6 minutes, team mode. Teams write the differences under each pattern before answering. - For 1, 4, 9, 16, have teams build squares from cubes (1 × 1, 2 × 2, 3 × 3) and see how many the next one needs - If many choose 24 after 2, 4, 8, 16, look at the gaps 2, 4, 8: they do not stay the same - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book
- Choosing 24 after 2, 4, 8, 16 by adding the last gap, 8. Check every gap - Choosing 20 after 1, 4, 9, 16, seeing growth but not the rule, or adding 4. Write the gaps 3, 5, 7 and predict +9 - Choosing 60 after 5, 10, 20, 40 by adding 20 from the last gap only
