What children will practise

Practise finding the mean by adding all the values and dividing by how many there are, for sets of 2, 3 and 4 numbers, and notice special cases such as all values equal or a zero in the set.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - Mean of 4, 6 and 8 (6) - Mean of 10, 20, 30 and 40 (25) - Three test scores of 70, 80 and 90 (80) - Mean of 12, 12 and 12 (12) - Mean of 0 and 10 (5)

How to use it in class

Use to open the topic of mean, after children have levelled out sweets or blocks; about 5 minutes. - Play in teams and have each team say what the total is and what it was divided by - If Q2 or Q6 goes badly, use real blocks to level the towers and count how many in each - Use Q5 to discuss why no calculation is needed - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Q2: dividing by 3 instead of 4 out of habit from the three-number items; count the values first every time - Q6: children often do not count 0 as a value and answer 10; stress that 0 is still one value - Q5: some answer 36 because they add and forget to divide
