A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Break it down until only primes are left.
Turn hours into minutes by multiplying by sixty.
Multiply a fraction by a hundred to get the percentage.
Before you play
Match numbers to their prime factorisations, convert hours to minutes, turn fifths into percentages, and name polygons by their number of sides.
4 matching rounds of 4 pairs each - Prime factors: 8 with 2 × 2 × 2, 18 with 2 × 3 × 3, 30 with 2 × 3 × 5 - Time to minutes: 1 and a half hours with 90, 2 and a half hours with 150 - Fraction to percentage: 1/5 with 20%, 3/5 with 60% - Shape to sides: octagon with 8, decagon with 10
Use as a short end-of-lesson game after factors; about 4 minutes. - Play as a class on the projector; in round 1 have children multiply the options out before matching - For round 3, teach the shortcut that 1/5 is 20%, then multiply by 2, 3 and 4 - If round 1 goes badly, draw factor trees for 12 and 18 on the board - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Round 1: 12 and 18 are easily swapped since both use 2 and 3; count how many 2s and 3s - Round 2: an hour and a half may be treated as 1.5 × 100; stress that half an hour is 30 minutes - Round 4: decagon is unfamiliar in English, though in Thai the number is in the name
