A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
You need both the base and the height before you can multiply and halve.
Put them all in the same form before comparing.
Multiplying before dividing keeps the numbers easier.
Before you play
Put maths procedures in order (finding a triangle's area, finding a percentage), order numbers written as both decimals and fractions, and order length units from smallest to largest.
4 ordering rounds of 4 cards - Steps for a triangle's area: measure the base, measure the height, multiply, divide by 2 - Smallest to largest: 0.25, 1/3, 0.5, 2/3 - Steps for a percentage: write it as a fraction, multiply by the whole number, divide by 100, give the unit - Units smallest to largest: millimetre, centimetre, metre, kilometre
Use after triangle area and percentages, to get children to put procedures into words; about 5 minutes. - Play in teams and have each team read its order aloud after every round - In rounds 1 and 3, if a team's order differs from the key but makes sense, accept it in discussion and explain the game fixes one order - For round 2, convert 1/3 and 2/3 to about 0.33 and 0.67 before ordering - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Round 2: 1/3 may be placed before 0.25 because 3 looks smaller than 25; convert to decimals first - Round 3: children who divide by 100 before multiplying are marked wrong although the answer is the same - Round 1: measuring base and height can be done in either order, so children may lose marks without a reason
