Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. 1/2 × 1/3 = ?

    • 1/6
    • 2/5
    • 1/5
    Read the explanation

Multiply top by top and bottom by bottom: one times one is one, two times three is six.

  2. 2/3 × 3/4 = ?

    • 6/7
    • 1/2
    • 5/7
    Read the explanation

Two times three is six, three times four is twelve - which simplifies to a half.

  3. 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = ?

    • 1/2
    • 1/8
    • 2
    Read the explanation

What children will practise

Multiply fractions by fractions and by whole numbers, divide fractions by multiplying by the reciprocal, and simplify answers, the groundwork for ค 1.1 ป.6/7.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - 1/2 × 1/3 (1/6) - 2/3 × 3/4 (1/2) - 1/2 ÷ 1/4 (2) - 3/4 × 4 (3) - 2/5 ÷ 2 (1/5)

How to use it in class

Use after teaching fraction multiplication and division; about 5-6 minutes. - Play solo, then explain Q3 with a picture: how many quarters fit in a half? - If many miss Q2, cancel the 3s before multiplying - For Q4 and Q5, read them as 3/4 of 4 and 1/3 of 9 - For Q6, accept both 1/5 and 2/10. They are equivalent although the game accepts only simplest form - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Q1: adding instead of multiplying gives 2/5 - Q3: multiplying without flipping gives 1/8 - Q2: getting 6/12 and not simplifying, or adding to get 5/7 - Q6: choosing 4/5 by multiplying by 2 instead of dividing
