A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Seven: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti.
Do begins the C major scale.
The chakhe and the phin sound when their strings are plucked.
Before you play
Practises Grade 3 music knowledge: the seven Western notes with do as the first, the chakhe as plucked, the piphat ensemble at ceremonies, tempo levels, and what regular practice does. Fits indicator ศ 2.1 ป.3/1.
6 questions, 3 options each - Which note starts the scale? (do) - Which Thai instrument is plucked? (chakhe) - Which Thai ensemble plays at ceremonies? (piphat) - What does regular practice do? (smoother playing and better focus)
Play in a music lesson, about 7 minutes, whole class. After revealing the piphat question, play a clip of a piphat band at an ordination or wai khru ceremony if you have one. For question 5, read it aloud as "sam chan versus song chan" and tap a slow and a fast tempo to compare. For a question many miss, sing the scale together and replay. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.
- Question 5 is printed as "sam cha" (a dance rhythm, cha-cha) rather than a Thai tempo level, which confuses children who know the dance. Correct it aloud to "sam chan" before playing. - Plucked instrument: children often pick the so, remembering it is a string instrument. Stress the so is bowed and the chakhe plucked. - Ceremonial ensemble: the marching band is a distractor children see at school often, so some pick it.
