What children will practise

Handle anger, sadness and stress in healthy ways, understand what empathy means, and know how to respond when teased.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - When very angry, stop and breathe deeply first - When sad, tell someone you trust - Empathy means understanding the other person's feelings (distractor: feeling sorry and giving them things) - When teased, say stop and tell the teacher - Stress is feeling pressured by something hard; ease it with exercise and talking to someone you trust

How to use it in class

Use in a health lesson on feelings or during homeroom; about 6 minutes. - Read questions aloud; play solo or as a whole class rather than as competing teams - For question 4, have children practise a firm but polite line: Stop, I don't like that - For question 3, use a scenario, a friend lost their homework, and have children say something that shows they understand - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 3: 'feel sorry and give them things' is close to children's idea of kindness, so most hesitate between it and the answer; explain empathy is understanding, not necessarily giving - Question 1: 'say how you feel straight away' sounds honest and echoes advice to express feelings; stress the word first in the question - Question 4: 'pretend not to hear forever' is advice some children get at home - Question 6: 'play games all day' is what many children really do; say a game break is fine, just not all day
