A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Each sport uses its own equipment.
Sportsmanship counts for more than the result.
In a good team everyone knows their job.
Before you play
Know sports equipment, the values of good sportsmanship, the jobs of team positions, and basic first aid for play injuries.
4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Sport to equipment, e.g. badminton with racket and shuttlecock, swimming with goggles - Sporting value to meaning, e.g. winning well with not mocking losers, playing by the rules with not cheating - Team position to job, e.g. defender guards the back, captain leads and coordinates - Injury to first aid, e.g. sprained ankle with a cold pack and raising it, nosebleed with leaning forward and pinching the nose
Use in the sports unit before sports day or before team games in PE; about 5 minutes. - Read the cards aloud; play as a class or in sports-day colour teams - For round 4, stress that when someone is hurt or faints, children always call a teacher or adult first; the game teaches what is done, not first aid alone - For round 4, have children actually practise leaning forward and pinching the nose, since many families still teach tilting the head back - For round 3, ask which position children would like to play in school football or share ball - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Round 4: many families teach tilting the head back for a nosebleed, so children hesitate at 'lean forward and pinch'; explain tilting back sends blood down the throat - Round 2: Grade 2 children find accepting defeat and forgiving hard to separate; use scenarios, we lost versus a friend missed a kick - Round 3: defender and goalkeeper both defend, so they may swap - Round 4: some children think a sprained ankle needs massage or heat
