What children will practise

Sort positive from negative communication, medicines from addictive substances, activities that build endurance from those that build flexibility, and invitations to refuse at once from ones that are fine to accept.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting rounds, 2 baskets each - Positive or negative communication: listening to the end, constant interrupting, praising a friend, mocking a weakness - Medicine or addictive substance: doctor-prescribed fever medicine, cigarettes, prescribed cough medicine, alcohol - Endurance or flexibility: long-distance running, stretching, long swims, yoga - Refuse at once or fine: an offer to try a cigarette, to play sport, to skip class, to read together

How to use it in class

Reviews several units in one game; about 4-5 minutes. - Play in teams; after each round, have teams add one more example per basket - Follow round 4 with real refusal practice: No, I won't try it, then walk away - After round 3, do a minute of simple stretches or yoga poses - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 2: some children have heard of cough syrup being misused and may drag it to addictive substance; point out 'prescribed' is what makes it a medicine - Round 3: children may think swimming makes you flexible and put long swims there; stress the word long - Round 2: alcohol and cigarettes are legal for adults, so some children wonder how they can be addictive substances
