What children will practise

Understand stress: its causes, the benefit of a moderate amount, physical symptoms, healthy coping, seeking help when it gets too much, and how sleep affects mood.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Stress comes from situations that feel hard to handle - A moderate amount helps you prepare - Physical symptoms: headache, stomach ache, poor sleep - Cope by exercising and talking to someone you trust (distractor: eating lots of sweets) - When stress disrupts daily life, ask an adult for help; enough sleep helps control emotions

How to use it in class

Good just before exams; about 6 minutes. - Play solo so children answer honestly - After question 3, ask children whether they have had headaches or stomach aches during exams - End with a minute of slow breathing together and name the people at school who can help, form teacher, counsellor - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 2: most children think stress is always bad and pick 'it makes you ill every time'; use the example of pre-race nerves making you run faster - Question 4: gaming all night and eating lots of sweets are what children really do; discuss without blame - Question 3: coughing, sneezing and a runny nose tempt children who think stress is a kind of illness - Question 5: 'stay home from school for a long time' is what children stressed by school wish were the answer
