    • It may make you feel less than others

Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Understand how social media affects feelings, what heavy screen use does, how to spot fake health news, how to set limits on media use, how to help a friend with mental health problems, and the 1323 mental health hotline.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Social media can make you feel inferior to others - Too much screen time affects sleep and relationships - Fake health news makes exaggerated claims without sources (distractor: it came from family) - Set limits by capping time and keeping screens out of the bedroom - Help a friend by listening and encouraging professional help; the mental health hotline is 1323

How to use it in class

Use in the mental health unit; about 6-7 minutes, played solo. - For question 1, discuss that social posts show other people's best moments, not their whole lives - For question 4, have children set a screen-time goal for a week and report back - Leave 1323 written on the board after the game - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 5: children this age value secrets between friends highly and pick 'promise to keep everything secret'; explain some things must be shared with an adult for the friend's safety - Question 3: children think lots of figures means credible, though this option is not itself a clear sign of fake news - Question 4: 'mute notifications and carry on' is what children actually do and feels like enough - Question 6: 1166 and 1323 may be confused, as both numbers are new to children
