What children will practise

Practise finding main ideas and reading linking words: the main point is usually first, แต่ shows contrast, เพราะ gives a reason, ดังนั้น gives a result; guess words from context; a lesson is something you can use (ท 1.1 ป.3/2).

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions - Where is a paragraph's main point usually found (the first sentence) - What does แต่ signal (contrast) - What do เพราะ (a reason) and ดังนั้น (a result) signal - If you don't know a word, what comes first (guess from context) - What is a story's lesson (something you can use)

How to use it in class

Use before a reading from a supplementary reader, 4 minutes in solo mode. - After the game, give out a short paragraph; children underline the main point and circle แต่, เพราะ and ดังนั้น - For items 3 and 4, children finish ฉันหิว เพราะ... and ฉันหิว ดังนั้น... to feel the difference Play it linked to a class and the results go into the mark book.

Common sticking points

- ดังนั้น: choosing a reason, confusing it with เพราะ just before; compare with sentence endings - Item 5: choosing skip the word, which is what children often really do - Item 1: choosing nowhere in particular after meeting paragraphs that sum up at the end
