What children will practise

Sorts four distinctions: samat versus sonthi compounds, compound versus complex sentences, native Thai versus borrowed words, and fact versus opinion. Fits ท 4.1 ป.5/1 (kinds of word) and links to ท 4.1 ป.5/5 (foreign words in Thai).

What's in the worksheet

4 questions, a sorting game with four cards each - วิทยาศาสตร์ and ประวัติศาสตร์ are samat; วิทยาลัย and มหรรณพ are sonthi - พ่อทำงานแต่แม่พักผ่อน is compound; บ้านที่ทาสีขาวเป็นของฉัน is complex - กิน and นอน are native Thai; คอมพิวเตอร์ and เทคโนโลยี are borrowed - A year has 365 days is a fact; The cool season is the pleasantest is an opinion

How to use it in class

A mid-term Grade 5 review of about 8 minutes. Play in teams and have each team give a brief reason before confirming. Question 1 is the hardest: before playing, write วิทยา+อาลัย and มหา+อรรณพ on the board to show the sounds merging. In question 2, tell them to look for ที่ as the signal of a subordinate clause. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: calling วิทยาลัย samat because it starts with วิทยา like วิทยาศาสตร์. Show that อาลัย begins with a vowel, so the sounds merge. - Question 1: not knowing มหรรณพ at all and guessing. Teach the word before playing. - Question 2: calling พ่อทำงานแต่แม่พักผ่อน complex because it has a linking word. Stress that แต่ joins two equal statements. - Question 4: some argue that Bangkok has the worst traffic in the world can be checked, since rankings exist. Hear them out, then point out that rankings disagree, so the worst is still a judgement. - Question 3: the in-game explanation says loanwords often carry a silent mark, yet เทคโนโลยี has none. Present it as a rough tendency, not a rule.
