What children will practise

Sorts four distinctions: compound versus doubled words, colloquial versus formal, fact-based versus invented writing, and royal versus polite vocabulary. Fits ท 4.1 ป.6/1 (analysing kinds of word) and ป.6/2 (suiting words to occasion and person).

What's in the worksheet

4 questions, a sorting game with four cards each - แม่น้ำ (river) and พ่อครัว (cook) are compounds; บ้านเรือน and เสื้อผ้า are doubled words - เยอะแยะ and ไม่ไหว are colloquial; จำนวนมาก and ไม่สามารถ are formal - News and non-fiction are fact; fables and novels are fiction - เสวย and บรรทม are royal; รับประทาน and นอนหลับ are filed as polite

How to use it in class

A review game before Grade 6 final exams, about 8 minutes in teams; have teams read each card aloud before dragging. Question 1 needs the most thought: give the rule that a compound makes a new meaning while a doubled word reinforces the old one, then ask whether แม่น้ำ is really the mother of water. After question 2, have each child turn one colloquial sentence of their own into formal Thai. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook. In English mode, the label doubled word for คำซ้อน can be confused with reduplication (คำซ้ำ), and some cards show only an English gloss (clothes, sleeping); Thai mode is clearer.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: filing เสื้อผ้า as a compound because two words are joined. Point out that เสื้อ and ผ้า are near in meaning, so it is a doubled word. - Question 4: hesitating over นอนหลับ, and rightly: it is ordinary everyday Thai, not a polite form like รับประทาน. Accept the objection, and explain that in this set the polite group simply means words used for ordinary people rather than for the King. - Question 3: filing สารคดี as fiction because the word is new. Mention TV wildlife documentaries.
