Count two groups of fruit pictures and find the total, within 10, as a concrete step before writing number sentences.
10 questions, 20 points - Two groups of fruit separated by a + sign, with the total written in a box, e.g. apples 2 + 3 = 5, oranges 4 + 1 = 5 - Doubles such as bananas 3 + 3 and cherries 4 + 4 - Some first groups are set out in two rows, e.g. mangoes in rows of 4 and 3, making 7, plus 1 more - A separate answer key is included (check question 10 first, see sheet issues)
Use early in an addition unit once children count to 10 confidently. Allow about 10 minutes. - Have children touch each picture as they count aloud, or cover each one with a counter - Follow up by saying each item as a sentence, such as "4 oranges and 1 more make 5", before writing 4 + 1 = 5 - In Q10, the picture shows 5 + 4 peaches, so accept 9 even though the printed key says 10
- Counting only the larger group, or writing one group's number as the answer - Missing or double-counting the second row in groups set out in two rows, such as the mangoes in Q9 or the peaches in Q10 - Counting on from the first group but repeating its last number, giving an answer one too many
