What children will practise

Use the context of a notice to work out ten key words such as club, hall, sale, closed, lost, entry and meeting, choosing a simple English definition for each.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Each item highlights one word on the notice and offers three endings for ... means - Correct definitions include hall = a corridor, closed = not open, lost = cannot find, leaves = goes away and entry = way in - Most distractors have nothing to do with the notice, e.g. a bag, very big, sits down, cake - A separate answer key circles and ticks the right option

How to use it in class

Use as the last sheet in the notices set, once children have met these signs twice already. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, have children cover the options and explain each highlighted word in Thai first - After marking, ask them to reuse the ten words in new notices, e.g. LOST: RED PENCIL CASE or COMPUTER ROOM CLOSED

Common sticking points

- Item 1, club: both a team and group are offered and are close in meaning; a child who picks a team has a reason, so explain that a club is not about competing - Item 2: many Thai learners know hall as an assembly hall, so a corridor may feel wrong - Item 6: leaves may call up the plural of leaf, sending children off to guess
