What children will practise

Read the short story Ben and the Red Tent, full of CVC words such as red, dog, sit, mat, bag, ham and jam, then answer questions about the tent, the dog, the bag and the night sky.

What's in the worksheet

A five-sentence story with 5 questions, 20 points - Ben has a red tent; his dog Max sits on a mat; his bag holds ham and jam; at night they look at the moon; Max naps in the tent - Three-option multiple choice, e.g. What is in Ben's bag? (a toy / ham and jam / a hat) and Where does Max nap? (in the tent / on a bus / at school) - Key words in the story are underlined in red - Key: red, Max, ham and jam, the moon, in the tent

How to use it in class

Use once children can blend CVC words with short a and e and are starting to read sentences. Allow about 15 minutes. - Sound out the underlined words first, e.g. m-a-t, mat, before reading the whole story - After answering, cover the text and have children retell the story from the picture, or act it out as Ben and Max

Common sticking points

- Item 4: choosing a map, which looks like mat from the story - Item 2: choosing Ben, the main character in the picture - Item 3: choosing a hat because Ben wears a red cap in the picture - Answering from the picture rather than the text; there is no mat in the picture, which can unsettle item 2
