Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Circle the sight word that completes each sentence, such as is, are, go, in or like, using the picture and ruling out words of the wrong kind such as blue or book.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Picture sentences such as My dog ___ happy. / There ___ two ducks. / We play ___ the park. - Key: see, under, go, is, are, in, like, run, are, in - Most distractors are the wrong part of speech (blue, book, small, red), so they are easy to rule out - A separate answer key boxes the answer in green with a tick

How to use it in class

Use as the last sheet in the P1-3 sight-words set. Allow about 10 minutes. - Check items 1 and 2 before handing it out: the key for item 2 contradicts the picture (the bird sits on the branch), and item 1 has two valid answers - After marking, children take a sight-word distractor such as can, with or has and write one sentence of their own

Common sticking points

- Item 2: children who look at the picture choose on, which matches it, while the key says under; accept on - Item 1: choosing have, which is grammatical and fits the picture, while the key says see - Item 5, Sam and I ___ friends.: choosing am because I sits just before the gap - Item 9, There ___ two ducks.: choosing has, translating the Thai word for there is/have
