Read ten notices and decide whether each statement matches, paying special attention to signs that forbid or negate, such as NO RUNNING and CLOSED.

What's in the worksheet

10 statements, 2 points each, 20 points in total - The same notices as the answer-the-questions sheet, e.g. ART CLUB TUESDAY, LOST BLUE BOTTLE, FOOTBALL GAME SCHOOL FIELD and PARENTS' MEETING THURSDAY - Five statements are true, e.g. The bus leaves at 7:15. and Science show has free entry. - Five are false: Students can run in the hall. / The library is open on Saturday. / The lost bottle is red. / Football game is in the library. / Parents' meeting is on Friday. - A separate answer key circles and ticks each answer

How to use it in class

Use straight after the answer-the-questions sheet: the notices are the same, but now children must handle opposites. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, read NO RUNNING IN THE HALL and LIBRARY CLOSED together and ask whether each tells you to do something or not to - After marking, have children rewrite the five false statements so they are true, e.g. The lost bottle is blue., and read them aloud

Common sticking points

- Items 2 and 4: spotting run or Saturday on the sign and ticking True, missing NO, and missing that CLOSED is the opposite of open - Item 5: the sign says BLUE, but a child who checks only the word bottle may tick True - Item 10: the picture gives no day, so children must read THURSDAY on the sign rather than guess
