What children will practise

Read a Monday-to-Sunday tick chart and choose always, usually, often, sometimes or never to match how many days each routine happens.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Each item has a picture, a seven-day chart and a gapped sentence, e.g. Mia ___ brushes her teeth. / Leo ___ drinks coffee. / I ___ go to bed late. - Seven ticks means always, none means never, two means sometimes; five or six ticks is usually or often, depending on which option the item offers - Three options per item, in a different order each time - The key writes each full sentence with the answer highlighted, e.g. Dad usually cooks dinner. and Sara often feeds her cat.

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet on frequency adverbs, after drawing a 0-100% frequency line on the board. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, ask children to count the ticks in each chart and write the number beside it, e.g. 7/7 or 2/7 - After marking, have each child chart one of their own routines for a week and tell a partner, e.g. I usually walk to school.

Common sticking points

- Items 3 and 8 show five and six ticks but offer often rather than usually; children who learnt 5-6 days as usually may hesitate - Item 2 also pictures a school bus, so a child reading the picture rather than the chart may choose never or sometimes - Item 10 shows a 9:00 PM clock and a sleeping child; some may read that as late and pick often, though every day is crossed
