What children will practise

Choose the singular or plural noun to fit the number of things in each picture, including -es, -ies and the unchanging fish, then pick is or are to agree with the subject.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Part A: circle the right word in 8 items (16 points): apple/apples, cats/cat, buses/bus, book/books, baby/babies, box/boxes, kites/kite and fish/fishes - Part B: choose the correct sentence in 4 items (4 points), e.g. This is a dog. / This are a dog. and They is stars. / They are stars. - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use once plain -s plurals are known and -es and -ies are being introduced. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, hold up one and then several real objects and have children say one pencil, three pencils - After marking, have pairs make Part B style sentences about classroom objects, such as These are chairs.

Common sticking points

- For fish the distractor is fishes, which children pick because they assume every plural needs -es - With baby/babies and box/boxes, children who have not met the rule may expect babys or boxs - Part B's wrong options swap is and are, as in These is flowers. and It are a toy.; children look at the noun and forget the subject - The order of options changes from item to item (e.g. cats / cat), so a child who always circles the first word will lose marks
