Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read a seven-day tick chart and write the frequency adverb into the gap with no options, placing it before the verb in sentences such as Tom ___ walks to school.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Same routines as the choose-the-word sheet: brushing teeth, walking to school, reading, eating ice cream, drinking coffee, wearing helmets, cooking, feeding the cat, playing chess and going to bed late - No word bank on the sheet: children write always, usually, often, sometimes or never themselves - Each of the five adverbs is the answer twice - The key gives full sentences with labels such as all days, most days, many days and two days

How to use it in class

Use after the choose-the-word sheet, as this one offers no options. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, agree with the class whether six ticks counts as usually or often and write it on the board, because this sheet uses both for six days - After marking, have children interview a partner with How often do you...? and report back using the sheet's sentence pattern

Common sticking points

- Items 3, 7 and 8 all show six ticks, yet the key says often, usually and often; a child who writes usually for all three is not wrong by the chart - Item 2 shows bus icons on Saturday and Sunday instead of crosses, so children may not know how to count those days - Spelling usually as usualy and sometimes as sometime - Putting the adverb after the verb, e.g. Tom walks usually to school, when copying the sentence out
