Teaching guide

What children will practise

Say each picture's name, hear its first sound and choose the beginning letter (R, I, N, G, Z, T, U, F), then pick the correctly spelt whole word.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Part A: choose the first letter from three in 8 words (16 points): _abbit, _nsect, _est, _oat, _ipper, _rain, _kulele and _ox - Sample options: _oat (D/C/G), _ipper (S/Z/J) and _ox (V/F/B) - Part B: pick the correct spelling (4 points): rabit / rabbit / ribbit, nist / nset / nest, train / trian / tran and ukalele / ukulele / ukelele - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use once children know the names and sounds of A-Z and are practising initial sounds. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Have children say every picture's name aloud before circling, stressing the first sound, e.g. /z/ zipper or /f/ fox - After marking, swap in a distractor letter to make a new word, goat to coat or fox to box, and ask what the new word means

Common sticking points

- In _ipper the distractors S and J catch Thai learners who pronounce z as s or j - In _ox, V sounds close to f, and B makes the real word box - In _nsect some children choose E, because the short i at the start sounds like a Thai e - _kulele begins with a yoo sound, which makes the letter hard to guess, and Part B's ukalele and ukelele differ from the real word by one vowel
