Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write ten body-part words from pictures without a word bank, telling apart close pairs such as head and hair, hand and arm, leg and foot.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points - Write the word under each of 10 pictures: head, hair, eye, ear, nose, mouth, hand, arm, leg and foot - There is no word bank, so every word is spelt from memory - Each picture shows a single part, e.g. a child's face, a mop of hair, a bent arm and a leg with the foot attached - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use at the end of a body-parts unit, after children have matched and spelt the words with options. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before writing, sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes or play a touch game, stressing the hand/arm and leg/foot pairs on this sheet - After marking, have children draw their own monster and describe it to a partner, e.g. It has three eyes and two mouths.

Common sticking points

- Picture 1 is a whole face, so children may write face rather than head; decide in advance whether to accept it - Picture 9 includes the foot, so some children write foot twice - eye is often spelt by sound as ai or aye - mouth loses its u (moth), and hair turns into hare or her
