Teaching guide

What children will practise

Spell body-part words with tricky or silent letters, such as shoulder, stomach, knee and elbow, by choosing missing letters and picking the correct spelling.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Part A: choose the missing letter in 8 words (16 points): h_ir, _lbow, ne_k, sh_ulder, stom_ch, fin_er, kn_e and b_ck - Part B: pick the correct spelling from three (4 points), e.g. sholder / shoulder / shouder and stomack / stumach / stomach - Part B's words (shoulder, stomach, finger, elbow) also appear in Part A - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use once children can match the basic body words and are moving on to longer ones like shoulder and stomach. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, have children touch each of the eight parts on themselves and say the word, so the close-up pictures are clear - After marking, read Part B's wrong spellings aloud as written and ask children what makes each one different from the real word

Common sticking points

- stomach is offered as stomack and stumach, because the ch here sounds like k - shoulder appears as sholder and shouder, dropping the u or the l - finger appears as fingre and fenger; in Part A's fin_er some children choose k because it sounds close - elbow appears as elbou and elbo because of the ow ending
