Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at each animal in its setting and write the name of its habitat, such as sea, desert, forest, polar region or pond.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 10 points - Write the habitat of ten animals; there is no word bank - Clownfish (sea), camel (desert), monkey and elephant (forest), cow (farm), penguin (polar region) - Frog (pond), bee (flower garden), bird (tree), crab (beach) - The background in each picture is the clue, such as cactus and dunes or icebergs - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use after a lesson on animals and the places they live. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Get children to look at the background clues before answering, such as sand, ice or reeds - Accept close habitat terms when they fit the picture, such as bird nest or bee nest, and sea or ocean - Follow up by asking what helps each animal survive where it lives, for example the camel or the penguin

Common sticking points

- Thinking penguins live at the North Pole with polar bears - Thinking frogs live in water all the time - Writing something in the picture instead of the habitat, e.g. "grass" for Q4 or "nest" for Q8 - Answering "river" or "fish tank" instead of "sea" for Q1
