Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at a plant picture and its arrow, then write the name of the part: root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit or seed, across several different plants.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 10 points - Write the name of the part each arrow points to; there is no word bank - Roots twice (a carrot and a seedling's fibrous roots), stems twice (bamboo and sunflower), leaves twice (a monstera leaf and a plain leaf) - Flowers twice (sunflower and hibiscus), fruit once (an apple) and seeds once (in a sunflower head) - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use after teaching plant parts with a real plant or a diagram. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Write root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit and seed on the board for children who are not yet confident spellers - Follow up with real vegetables, such as carrots, cabbage and bean sprouts, and ask which part of the plant we eat

Common sticking points

- In Q2 children call the carrot a fruit or a stem rather than a root - In Q1 the arrow points at the seeds in the sunflower's centre, but children answer "flower" - In Q6 the jointed bamboo cane may not look like a stem to children - In Q5 and Q8 children may write "petal" rather than "flower"
