Teaching guide

What children will practise

Arrange word cards into It is a ... / It is an ... sentences to describe a picture, then choose the sentence that is right on both a/an and is/are.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Part A: order three cards into a sentence for 8 pictures (16 points), e.g. apple / an / It is and kite / is / a - Key answers include It is an apple., It is an umbrella., It is a bus. and It is a robot. - Part B: choose the correct sentence in 4 items (4 points); wrong options misuse either the article or the verb, e.g. It is a egg. and It are an egg. - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use as the third a/an sheet, after the circling and gap-fill sheets, to move a/an into full sentences. Allow about 15 minutes. - Items 2, 4, 6 and 8 have no It card, so tell children beforehand to add It themselves, or write It on the board for everyone to use - After marking, play a mystery-bag game: a child feels an object and says It is a pencil. or It is an eraser.

Common sticking points

- Items 2, 4, 6 and 8: building only is a cat or a cat is, because there is no It card - Part B: choosing It are an egg., checking the an but not the are - Part B item 3: choosing It is a ice cream., unsure about a two-word noun - Leaving off the full stop, since no card carries one
