Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at street scenes with arrows and landmarks, fill in direction words such as straight, right, opposite and across in short dialogues, then complete a short directions dialogue of their own.

What's in the worksheet

5 items plus one dialogue task, 20 points in total - Five A/B exchanges, e.g. Excuse me. Where is the library? / Go ___. It is next to the park. and How do I get to the museum? / Go ___ the bridge. - Key answers 1-5: straight, right, straight, opposite and across - A map dialogue task with four gaps: How can I get to the ___? / Go ___, then turn ___. It is ___ the park. - No word bank; the key's sample for the task is library, straight, left, next to

How to use it in class

Use after teaching direction words with gestures: point ahead, turn left, turn right. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Before starting, put straight, left, right, opposite, next to and across on the board, since the sheet has no word bank - For the closing dialogue task, pair children: one chooses a place, the other gives directions from the classroom door, then they swap

Common sticking points

- Item 2: the arrow curves right, but many children mix up left and right even when the character faces away from them - Item 4 has no arrow, so children may write next to instead of opposite, not noticing the bank is across the road - Item 5: writing cross instead of across, or over, which is close in meaning; decide in advance whether to accept it - Spelling straight as strait or stright
