English Conversation worksheets on Asking for directions for Grades 4–6 (P.4–P.6), difficulty 1/5. PDF, downloadable as soon as payment clears.
Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Match five ways of asking the way, such as Where is...?, How can I get to...? and Is the ... near here?, to answer cards that give directions or a location, then use them in a role-play.
5 items, 10 points, plus a role-play corner - Questions include Excuse me. Where is the library?, Is the bus stop near here? and How do I get to the hospital? - Answer cards A-E, e.g. Go straight and turn left at the bank., Yes. It is next to the bakery., Go across the bridge. It is on your right. and It is opposite the school. - The role-play corner has three gaps: How can I get to the ___? / Go ___. It is ___ the school. - A separate answer key gives the letters in red
Use after the gap-fill directions sheet, once children know straight, left, opposite and across. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before matching, have children sort the answer cards into those that give a route (Go...) and those that give a place (It is...) - Items 1 and 5 have interchangeable location replies, while item 5 asks for directions but its key gives a location. Ask children to explain from the map and accept a reply that communicates, rather than scoring by key letter alone - For the role-play corner, arrange desks as streets with place labels and let children take turns asking the way and walking the route
- Item 3, Is the bus stop near here?, needs the card that starts with Yes., but children may pick another location card - Items 1 and 5: swapping cards B and E, since both give a location with It is... and the library picture shows no school - Item 4 shows a bridge, so most children pick D, but those who do not know across will be guessing
