Teaching guide

What children will practise

Complete ten short cafe exchanges with the phrases a customer uses to order and reply, such as I'd like, that's all and To go, without a word bank.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (2 points each) - Each item is a two-line A/B exchange; children complete B's reply - Phrases in the key: I'd like (items 1-2), please, Thank you, that's all, thank you, Here you are, To go and delicious - Item 6 asks a price: How much is the sandwich? - It is ___ baht. - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use after modelling restaurant dialogues through role play. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Because there is no word bank, put I'd like..., please, No, thank you and That's all on the board before children write - After marking, pair children as waiter and customer and role-play using the menu board in the header picture (fried rice, noodles, sandwich, soup, pizza)

Common sticking points

- In items 1-2 children often write I want instead of I'd like; it makes sense but is less polite, so agree the marking rule in advance - Item 6 gives no price anywhere on the sheet; the key says 45, so accept any number written in the right form - Children often swap Thank you and Here you are between items 4 and 8, unsure who is handing something over - In item 9 For here is also a correct answer
