Teaching guide

What children will practise

Put word cards in order to build can / can't sentences, then choose the sentence that matches a picture.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points in total - Section A: order the cards and write the sentence in 8 items, 2 points each (16 points), e.g. He can play the guitar., A baby can't drive., A penguin can't fly. - Section B: choose the right sentence from three in 4 items (4 points); distractors swap can/can't, the subject (He/She/They) or the verb - All instructions are in English - A separate answer key writes out each sentence

How to use it in class

Use after the can/can't fill-in sheet, since children need subject + can + verb first. Allow about 15 minutes. - Do item 1 together on the board and point out that the card with a capital letter goes first - Use the wheelchair basketball picture (item 10) to talk about ability, then let each child say an I can... sentence

Common sticking points

- Putting can after the verb or at the start: He play can the guitar. - Leaving off the full stop or the capital letter when copying the sentence out - In Section B, choosing They for one girl (item 9) or She for a boy (item 10) - Choosing He can't play basketball. in item 10 because of the wheelchair
