What children will practise

Compare two pictures and write the comparative into a ... than ... sentence with no options, deciding both which adjective fits and how to add -er correctly.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - The same sentences as the choose-the-word sheet, e.g. A giraffe is ___ than a rabbit., A backpack is ___ than a book. and This pencil is ___ than that pencil. - No word bank and no adjective given: children choose the adjective themselves - Key: bigger, taller, faster, slower, stronger, faster, heavier, sweeter, colder and longer - Two need a spelling change: bigger (double g) and heavier (y to i)

How to use it in class

Use after the choose-the-comparative sheet, once -er is familiar. Allow about 15 minutes. - The sheet does not name the adjective, so write big, tall, fast, slow, strong, heavy, sweet, cold and long on the board first, and agree to accept other sensible words - After marking, have children compare themselves or classroom objects, e.g. My bag is heavier than your bag.

Common sticking points

- Item 9: the worksheet labels Yesterday as rainy and Today as sunny, so a child following the picture will write warmer or hotter, not the keyed colder - Items 7 and 8: children may write bigger, since the backpack is bigger than the book and the orange bigger than the lemon, which also matches the picture - Spelling biger or heavyer, missing the doubled letter or the y-to-i change - Writing more fast or more big
