Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Put five word cards in order to make a comparison sentence, subject + is + comparative + than + the thing compared, e.g. The giraffe is taller than the rabbit.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Five cards per item, e.g. bigger / is / The elephant / than / the mouse. and is / Winter / than / autumn. / colder - Each picture labels the two things compared: elephant and mouse, Winter and autumn, pencil and crayon - The subject card has a capital letter and the last card carries the full stop, which signal the start and end - The key gives full sentences, e.g. An airplane is faster than a bus. and The pencil is longer than the crayon.

How to use it in class

Use as the third comparatives sheet, after the choose and fill-in sheets. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, have children find the capitalised card and the card with the full stop in item 1, then place the rest between them - After marking, ask children to swap the two things and change the adjective, e.g. The mouse is smaller than the elephant.

Common sticking points

- Item 9: Winter has a capital but autumn does not, which may confuse children, or lead to Autumn is colder than winter. - Putting than before the comparative: The elephant is than bigger the mouse. - Putting the comparative before is, because Thai uses no verb here: The elephant bigger is than the mouse.
