Read Leo's Garden Project, a short account of planting seeds step by step, and answer ten When, Who, What, Where and How questions, including the sequencing question What did Leo do first?
An eight-sentence story with 10 questions, 2 points each - On Saturday Leo helps his grandmother plant tomato and bean seeds: he makes holes, covers the seeds, waters them and puts the pots by a sunny window; a week later green leaves appear - Questions include What seeds did Leo plant?, What did Leo do first?, How did Leo feel? and When did Leo promise to water plants? - Three options each; some distractors come from the story itself, e.g. watered the pots and wrote the date in item 4 - A separate key writes each answer in red
Use as the first sheet on this passage, before the true/false sheet. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before reading, ask children to predict from the picture what Leo and his grandmother are doing, then underline First, Then and A week later as they read - After marking, have children retell the planting steps aloud with First, Then and After that, or plant real bean seeds in class
