Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read The Kite Festival and use context to work out the bold words, such as gentle, gathered, proud, tangle, prize and cheered, choosing an English meaning from three options.

What's in the worksheet

A nine-sentence story with 10 questions, 2 points each - Maya and her brother Nino take a red kite to the riverside kite festival; the string tangles, Nino helps fix it and the judges give Maya a prize - Words tested: bright, gentle, gathered, proud, tangle, fix, prize, cheered, danced and held - Answers include gentle = soft, gathered = came together, tangle = become twisted and held = took place - Some distractors are opposites, e.g. bright: dull and proud: worried; a separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use as the last sheet in the comprehension set, as it focuses on working out meaning from context. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before looking at the options, have children read each bold word in its sentence and guess the meaning in Thai, then check against the choices - After marking, ask each child to write sentences of their own with three of the words, e.g. proud, tangle and cheered

Common sticking points

- Item 1: many children know bright as giving off light, so colourful feels wrong even though it is the colour sense - Item 10: children who know held only as holding something may pick ended or was forgotten - Item 6: fix is not bold in the story, so children may not know which word the item is testing
