Before you begin
Read Mia's Rainy Day Picnic and decide whether ten statements are true or false, watching for swapped details such as the colour of the blanket and boots, and who made the sandwiches.
A nine-sentence story with 10 true/false statements, 2 points each - Mia and her cousin Ben plan a picnic at Riverside Park, but it rains, so they spread a blue blanket indoors; after lunch the rain stops and they put on yellow boots to sail paper boats in the puddles - Five are false: Mia and Ben went to the park before the rain. / The blanket was red. / Ben made cheese sandwiches. / The children wore blue rain boots. / Mia and Ben thought the picnic was boring. - Five are true, e.g. They had their first picnic inside the house. and They sailed paper boats in puddles. - A separate key gives TRUE or FALSE in red
Use after the Leo passage or on its own during a weather unit. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, have children circle the colour words and names in the story, since most false statements swap one of these - After marking, ask them to correct the five false statements, e.g. Mia made cheese sandwiches., then tell a partner what they do on a rainy day
- Item 5: ticking TRUE after spotting cheese sandwiches, though the story (and the item's own picture) shows Mia making them - Item 8: ticking TRUE because the boot icon on the section banner is blue, while the story says yellow - Item 2: ticking TRUE on seeing Riverside Park, without reading before they left home - Item 3: hesitating over first picnic, which the story never states
